Kajal

Film: Kajal
Starring: Salony Luthra, Sunil Palliwal
Directed by: Pakhi Tyrewala

What’s it about

The 20-minute short film is the story of a woman, who is unnamed in the movie. The film focusses on two days in the life of a woman who works late nights in office, is harassed by the watchman in the building and abused by her husband. She comes across a hidden parcel stashed away by a petty thief and is terrified, yet excited by the prospect of using what she finds inside. Without giving the suspense away, she manages to use it to her advantage and finds the release that she is looking for.

What’s hot

The ploy of not giving a name to the protagonist is effective as this could be the story of any woman. In the short duration of 20 minutes, it conveys a strong message that a woman doesn’t need to look for outside help, but find the strength within to empower herself. The lead actress, Salony, does an effective job of playing a harassed employee and a scared wife. She makes the  transformation from a troubled woman to an empowered one quite believable.

What’s not

While the music of the movie is by AR Rahman, it gets a little jarring in places and takes away from the moment.

What to do

Watch it for good performances and the strong message it sends out.
