'Bhoomi' Review: Made for only die-hard Sanjay Dutt fans

What it's about:

It's a story of rape and revenge — the same old 80s tried-and-tested formula. Arun Sachdeva's (Sanjay Dutt) daughter Bhoomi (Aditi Rao Hydari) is raped on her wedding night and their lives change after that. When he doesn't get justice for his daughter, he takes matters into his own hands and the humble shoe salesman turns into a vigilante.

What's hot:

This film was much awaited for Sanjay Dutt's return to the big screen. And he does justice to the part. The father-daughter scenes are handled well. Sharad Kelkar is impressive as the unrepentant Dhauli. Some scenes stand out. Aditi shines in the scene where struggling with her secret on the wedding night and the one in which she asks her spineless fiancee to erase her phone number from her wall.

What's not:

The police station and the courtroom scene will make you cringe.  Also, the gang rape scene could have done without leering close-ups. Sridevi's Mom was based on the same subject but it was handled more sensitively. Too much violence. It's not an easy film to watch. Bhoomi lags far behind Kaabil and Mom which were based on a similar subject. The item song featuring Sunny Leone dulls the "feminism" flavour that Omung wants to give this film. The climax is straight out of a bad '80s movie, with some unintentionally funny moments. Shekhar Suman annoys.

Strictly for loyal Sanjay Dutt fans.
