The Mauritian government recently honoured Rani Mukerji with the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Award’, as part of their run up to the 50th year of Independence celebrations. The  Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, conferred this award on Rani  during the course of Mauritius Cinema Week.

The festival saluted close cultural and historical ties to both India and France on the awards evening. Rani received the award along with the popular French actress, Emmanuelle Beart. Says Rani, “I am humbled, thankful and proud that Mauritius has given me such honour and love.

This festival brings some really good cinema and also provides a rare chance for French and Indian cinema to be celebrated together. Many of my films like Bichhoo, Hello Brother and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai have been shot here. I love the pristine natural scenery and vibrant culture of Mauritius. I am thankful that those of Indian origin have given me such affection.

We share a common history of colonialism and struggle for independence. In the years to come, I hope we also find common ground in our arts and cinema.”
