A dog is a man’s best friend. That may be so, but if you take a look at some of our filmi friendships, they’ve often been extended to include horses, pigeons, monkeys, elephants and even rats (Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na) and turtles (Katti Batti). On Friendship Day today, After Hrs takes a look at some of the most endearing on-screen dostanas between our two-legged and four-legged friends...
Madhuri Dixit-Nene might not have been Tuffy’s original owner in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (the dog is part of Salman Khan’s household in the film), but she and the dog form a close bond. In fact, at the end of the film, it’s Tuffy who manages to reunite the lovers by delivering a letter meant for Salman, to Mohnish Behl. And they live happily ever after.
The friendship between Raju (played by Rajesh Khanna) and Ramu the elephant, is so deep that the former chooses his four-legged friend over his wife and child, when he is asked to do so. The song Chal Chal Chal Mere Haathi, where the superstar woos the heroine with the help of his elephant friends became really popular.
Think of Basanti in Sholay and you will immediately be reminded of Dhanno. Hema Malini’s constant companion in the movie, her ghodi is witness to the love affair between her and Veeru (played by Dharmendra). And when Basanti calls out, ‘Chal Dhanno, aaj teri Basanti ki izzat ka sawaal hai!’ then it’s Dhanno, who comes to her rescue to help her escape Gabbar’s goons.
When Bhagyashree rescues a white kabootar from Mohnish Behl’s shotgun, she gains a feathered friend, who often turns up to help her in her time of need. From delivering her love letter to Salman Khan as she sings Kabootar Ja Ja Ja to helping the lovers escape from the baddies at the end, this kabootar does it all. After all, dosti ki hai, nibhaani toh padegi hi!
While animals have often helped their filmi friends escape goons or helped them in matters of the heart, this movie had a dog (Moti) avenging the death of his master (Jackie Shroff). Not only does the dog bite and kill each and every villain, he even leads the police to his master’s killers. No wonder they say, a dog is a man’s best friend!
Bade Kaam Ka Bandar, Maare Toh Dharmender, Naache Toh Jeetender, Roye Toh Rajender... Govinda and Chunky Pandey’s monkey Bajrangi is compared to leading yesteryear actors in a song in the movie Aankhen. The monkey, along with the film’s comic heroes, formed a friendly trio and provided many laughs to the audience.
Whenever Iqbal (Amitabh Bachchan) calls out to ‘Allah Rakha’ (the eagle), it flies out of nowhere to land on his arm in the superhit 1983 film Coolie. The bird even saves the hero from gundas by gouging out their eyes.
