Every city evolves and the 606-year-old city found by emperor Ahmed Shah is no different.  The city might have played a great role in witnessing many historic event, but today we will take a look back how Ahmedabad city got its name. Many books have been written by researchers and scholars which gives insight on what the city was known over the years. Below is the list of the names it was known as:

Shwabradesh (12,000 BC to 5,000BC)

In prehistoric era, today’s Ahmedabad was known as Shwabradesh. This name has been found in the rock inscription of 150 AD during time of King Rudraraman in Junagadh.

Ashaval (Ca 800 to Ca 1100)

The second name, it was known as Asavali. Famous historian Al-baruni has mentioned this name in his book, ‘Kitab-Ul-Hind. Time of the city he mentioned was around 1030. It was area of Asha Bhil which was destructed around 1047.

Karnavati (Ca 1100 to Ca 1300)

During the time of Solanki dynasty in Gujarat, Karnadev won over the region of Ashaval and renames it to Karnavati. During this time, many Jain preachers visited city. Many Shiv temples have been constructed during this time.

Ahmadabad (1411 AD to 1650 AD)

Today’s Ahmedabad was founded on February 26, 1411 AD by Ahmed Shah Badshah and the area was known as Ahmadabad. Later in 1486 Muhammad Begda builds city gates. Many heritage monuments we find today which have been recognised even by the UNESCO were built during this period. Mainly Bhadra fort, Moti Mahal, Kankaria Lake, Sarkhej Roja, Dada Hari ni Vav etc.

Name Ahmadabad remained same during the Sultanate era and Mughal period. Many businessmen, saints, poets, writers visited city at this time.

Ahmedabad (1707 AD to 1818 AD)

The accent was changed when Maratha ruled the city. During this time, city got divided between Marathas and Peshwas. Sahjanand Swani of Swanianarayan sect was visitor during this time. Gaekwad Haveli is the monument constructed in this era.

Amdavad (1818 AD to 1947 AD)

When  British-raj came in force they called Amdavad city.

Many river bridges like Ellisbridge, Gandhi Bridge, Sardar Bridge, Gandhi Ashram, Hatheesingh na Dera, Gujarat College etc were built during this time.

Ahmedabad (Post independence)

In the Bombay Municipal Act, City’s name has been written as Ahmedabad. Even the Municipal Corporation and the state government is using the same name.

Twist was brought in to its spelling by former mayor Asit Vora, in August 2011 when he without proposal and resolution changed the spelling of Ahmedabad to Amdabad in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s logo. However, in the official communication, city administration is still using the spelling Ahmedabad. The present municipal commissioner Mukesh Kumar okay with either spelling usage.
