High drama erupted at VS Hospital on Monday morning after relatives of Farzan Saiyad, 32, refused to accept his body. The family that was originally demanding compensation and arrest of the accused, agreed to accept the body in the evening after it was conveyed to them that all seven accused in the case had been arrested.

Interestingly, while three accused including the main accused Amit Patel had been arrested immediately after the incident, four were held only on Monday after Farzan's death. Farzan and his mother Roshanbiwi were allegedly attacked by Bajrang Dal activists while on the way to their field on March 5.

The activists allegedly chopped off the elderly women's thumb, index finger and middle finger and also broke her arm.

They also attacked Farzan who suffered a skull fracture. Both were rushed to the VS Hospital in the city where Farzan succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning. His mother is still under treatment.

The family had refused to accept the body and a group of people had been doing dharna outside the hospital. Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani had also joined the protesters for a short period of time.

Shamshad Pathan, a lawyer who has been helping the family fight their case, said the police could not nab anyone after the incident.

"But soon after Farzan's death, the cops nabbed two of the absconding accused from Goa and two from the city. That alone shows how much the cops are hand-in-glove with the accused," said Pathan.

Imran Sheikh, a social worker, who has been with the family since the incident happened said they had initially asked for compensation and arrests of the accused.

"Later we came to know that all the seven accused had been arrested. The Muslim community decided to collect funds for the family instead of waiting for the government," said Sheikh. He said since the news of the arrest, the family has agreed to take the body of Farzan.

Sheikh alleged that the Bajrang Dal had been carrying out violent activities in Chhatral targeting Muslim residents.
