Nagalben Dalit, a middle-aged woman, has lived a life of misery for the past 20 years. A scheduled caste resident of Dhrol town in Jamnagar district, Nagalben hasn't left this town for 20 years or may be more. The reason? Nagalben, a woman of Gujarati origin, is a citizen of Pakistan and is in India on visitor's visa. Local BJP leader and former cabinet minister Raghavji Patel even wrote to the Chief Minister last week, highlighting her plight and requesting him to help her out.

Nagalben, a native of Dhrol, was married to Dhirubhai, a citizen of Karachi in Pakistan. She, however, was subject to domestic violence at her in law's house. She came to visit her maternal home years ago and never returned. Meanwhile, she gave birth to a boy, who works in Morbi town. As Nagalben's visa does not allow her to travel anywhere apart from Dhrol, local police do not let her leave the town.

Nagalben said, "I am not literate; my son is the only person who takes care of me, and even he is settled elsewhere for work. My visa does not allow me to stay with my son. I want Indian citizenship now and will return the Pakistan passport. I have been trying to do this for many years and have approached Raghavjibhai as a last resort."

Raghavji Patel, talking to DNA, said, "The lady and his son had come to me with the application and I decided that I should do something about it. I have written to the CM and the Home Department of Gujarat to get in touch with the competent authority. The government also holds camps for such people who have migrated from Pakistan to Gujarat."

"There are many people in this area who have relatives in Pakistan. Nagalben was married to a person from Pakistan post-independece. This means people from this part of the country continued to maintain relations with Pakistanis, even after partition," Patel added.
