Seven occupiers paid more than crores tax in Ahmedabad

Have you ever wondered who is paying the highest property tax in your city? And how much are they paying? There are seven occupiers in city, who have paid more than crore as tax fees to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) during last fiscal. An owner of a closed mill has paid a whopping Rs2.51 crore.

The top payer is apparently was on the list of top defaulters since long! The commercial Ahmedabad Mills Company Limited, located at Dariyapur, has paid that highest property tax in the 2017-18 fiscal. Property tax in levied in city as per the land area. The payer occupies area of 18,716 square metres.

Interestingly, the mill has cleared their dues after more than two decades to AMC. "The mill was closed since long and they haven't paid to AMC their due since more than two decades. A part of that mill was sold and hence, we were successful to recover our dues," said senior tax official.

According to the officials, the Ahmedabad Mills Company Limited is one of the closed mills, which has paid their dues after a long time. "They took the benefit of the 50% discount on interest scheme and has paid their dues in March," added the official.

The second highest tax was paid by a stadium located at Kankaria which has paid a weighty amount of Rs 2 crore. There is another stadium which has paid more than crore as a tax which is Gujarat Sports Authority, they have paid Rs. 1.07 crore as the tax.

In the list of top 20 payers, there are four hospitals, two hotels, a laboratory, an electric company, gas company etc. Each and every property – immovable asset are bound to pay tax except, temples, mosques, church and Gurudwara. When Congress was in power, they gave these institution tax exemption. Total tax dues, AMC has to recover is roughly Rs 2100 crore.

"The civic body needs to announce 100% interest rebate if they are willing to recover the tax income. When we were in power we had done this once and we have received noticeable income. If AMC announces such scheme, they can easily recover thousand crore and they don't need to issue bonds," said Badruddin Shaikh, former leader of opposition.
