Seventeen schools from across the state will switch off fans, lights and other electrical appliances for an hour on Monday under an initiative to raise awareness of energy conservation and cutting down pollution in Ahmedabad.
The schools, which have come under the banner of ‘The Green Principals and Educators League’, plan to take the efforts beyond the one-day exercise by encouraging students to contribute to the cause. Students will be asked to do projects on energy conservation for their second term.
The schools have asked their students to observe the similar practice of switching off electricity for an hour at their homes and encourage at least five neighbours, friends or relatives to do the same.
Renu Seth, founding mentor of the initiative, said, “From the time Ahmedabad has been declared a very polluted city, I have been trying to do something to increase the environmental awareness and green practices in our schools. Last week, all schools observed their meter reading for three days for an hour to get an average. The same exercise was done with five 2BHK houses as well. Once the project is over, we will get the findings and do a comparison to come out with a figure on energy conservation.”
Seth said they plan to switch off power on December 11 to commemorate the World Energy Conservation Day which falls on December 14. “But since it is a poll holiday, we thought to advance it.”
