In a first, the Gujarat University is all set to host a session on the much debated idea of 'One Nation, One Election', being pushed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and often echoed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Interestingly, the chief guest of the session will be Professor Aniruddha Deshpande, Chairman of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-led institute Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini (RMP). The session will be held on April 26.

Confirming the same, Dr Himanshu Pandya, Vice-chancellor of GU said, "This is one of most debated issue at present and we want our students to go through a brainstorming session on the same."

While there have been theories which say that simultaneous elections will save the taxpayer's money and these funds will be used for public good, it has drawn flak from many parties, too.

An academician requesting anonymity said that hosting discussions on current topics are good and should be encouraged in an academic institution. However, the intention needs to be watched out for. RSS has been pushing this model for many years now. And if a similar institution head has been asked to participate in the session, the outcome might not be fair, the professor of a reputed management institute said.

Professor Pravin Mishra, faculty at a premier institution said, "Saffronising education is dangerous. While the Constitution allows separate elections as every election is different, the present government wants people to believe that people vote for one person. People vote for candidates and they are supposed to elect their representative. An educational institution holding such an event should be opposed. What are the political science professors of GU doing? Why are the students silent? The institutes may have to host such events as they would be pressured, but students do not need to comply. This is not the way to push a narrative. Why are such sessions not held in institutes like JNU, FTII, and others?"
