Sadhvi Jayshree Giri, who was arrested in a cheating case and escaped police custody while on parole, was caught at a toll booth on the Udaipur-Nathdwara highway in Rajasthan on Tuesday evening. “She (Giri) was caught by the Ahmedabad crime branch while travelling in a Volkswagen along with a driver and a six-year-old boy,” JK Bhatt, JCP – crime branch, said.

Bhatt said, “A week ago, we had received information that the absconding Sadhvi is in Rajasthan and we sent three teams to locate and capture her. Based on CCTV footage, we knew that she was travelling in a red Volkswagen, and hence we kept an eye on toll booths on the Rajasthan highway.

Crime branch ACP Dr Rajdeepsinh Jhala said, “Capturing Giri was a priority for us as she had escaped from right under our noses. For this, a total of seven teams were formed for the task. Based on intelligence reports, three of these teams were sent to Rajasthan. As all her phones were off, we had asked the teams to be on alert.” Initial investigation has revealed that the car belongs to one Iqbal Mansuri, a resident of Chiloda.

Giri had on June 14 escaped right from under the noses of the four police personnel escorting her from a mall in the city. Accompanied by the four officials, Jayshree had come here from Banaskantha to seek an extension of her bail, which was not granted.

The officials reported that they had been taking Giri to the hospital as she had complained of being unwell. On the way, they said she wanted to use the toilet and so they stopped at Himalaya Mall, where she gave them the slip.

The four police officers, along with two lawyers, were arrested later that day for their alleged involvement in helping Giri jump parole.
