The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Monday launched the school flag programme to spread awareness about air quality in city and in specific areas. The launch coincided with the reopening of schools after summer vacations.

As many as 100 private and AMC-run schools in the city have been chosen for the programme. Flags of particular colours will be hoisted at these schools depending on the quality of air in the area on that day. While launching the programme, mayor Gautam Shah said, “The children and the elderly are at maximum risk when air pollution increases. To protect them from the ill-effects of pollution, we decided to introduce the school flag program.”

Elaborating on the programme, Shah said, “Four colours have been finalised for the flags—yellow, orange, red and maroon—to indicate normal to severe air pollution in the area. We will get information of air quality from the air monitoring units placed at eight different locations in the city,” added Shah.

A mobile application is also available to give information of air quality on the particular day as well as next two days. The app, SAFAR, was launched on May 12. It is already functioning in Delhi and Mumbai.

AMC has planned to issue prior warnings to patients of respiratory tract ailments to avoid certain areas where the air quality is likely to deteriorate. The total cost of the project is Rs20 crore which has been funded by the Centre.
