The Brahmins in the state have demanded a separate board for them look into their issues. Speaking at a press conference held in the city on Tuesday, the Brahma Vikas Ayog Andolan Samiti, that claims to represent the interests of the Brahmins in the state, said that if there can be a separate board to look into the development of other communities similar boards can also be constituted for the Brahmins.

Yagnesh Dave, the convener of the samiti, said they were demanding help for those who were extremely poor within the community. "Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka have a separate board for Brahmins then why can't Gujarat have it. Under the board, we are demanding economic help to Brahmins who are poor and often perform rituals for everyone. We are asking for medical aid for them, a pension and salary as well as educational opportunities for their children," said Dave.

He said the samiti had in 2015 approached the then chief minister Anandiben Patel with their demands but nothing came of it. The samiti, which has also extended its support to the Rajput community in its fight against the movie Padmavat, said they will be carrying out a rally on January 26 to press for their demands.

He said that of the total community members at least 10 to 12 lakh were in extreme condition economically. "This is as per our internal survey. As of now, we have tried to help them in our own way by providing them with life insurance and mediclaim," said Dave. He clarified that the community was not seeking any reservation, unlike others. "But a board to look into our situation and help members is a fair demand," said Dave.
