In a surprise development, retired Gujarat police officer NK Amin, an accused in a number of fake encounter cases, is among the five police officers from the state promoted to the Indian Police Service (IPS).

The Union Home ministry said in a notification on Friday that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had on March 27, 2017, approved Select Lists for 2015 and 2016, towards the filling up of two and three substantive vacancies in the Gujarat cadre of IPS.

According to the notification, Amin and SV Parmar have been included in the Select List for 2015.

It further said that Amin's inclusion in the list was provisional subject to clearance in the criminal proceedings pending against him.

Amin will turn 60, the age of superannuation, in August, but it could not be immediately ascertained if his promotion to IPS means he would be re-inducted in service.

Minister of State for Home Pradipsinh Jadeja could not be reached for a comment. Home department officials were also busy with meetings.

Amin had retired as Superintendent of Police (SP) from the Gujarat Police in August 2016. However, after retirement, he was appointed as SP of Mahisagar district for a year. He was later shifted to Tapi district. However, he demitted office in August 2017, following a Supreme Court order. The police officer had said at the time that he had decided to step down to save the government from any embarrassment. Tarun Barot, another tainted cop who was appointed after retirement, had also quit along with Amin.

Three other Gujarat police officers — AM Muniya, MJ Chavda and Usha Rada — were included in the Select List of 2016, according to the Home ministry notification.
