Jashodaben, wife of BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, has cut short her pilgrimage and returned, said sources in the family.
The retired teacher — who has caught the nation’s eye after Modi mentioned her name in the affidavit while filing his nomination from Vadodara — has decided to stay away from the limelight.
“She was on pilgrimage to Haridwar but cut short her tour and came back to Ahmedabad. At present, she is staying with a well-wisher,” said Ashok, the elder brother of Jashodaben Modi.
He further stated that though she was not mentioned in earlier affidavits, she had always prayed for Modi. “Whatever the world says, my sister has always considered him (Modi) as her husband. She has always prayed for his prosperity. She was in Haridwar to seek God’s blessings so that Narendra Modi becomes prime minister. But she curtailed her tour and came back,” said Ashok, adding that he was going to Ahmedabad to see her.
Meanwhile, family sources confirmed that she had come back to Ahmedabad late on Monday night and selected a distant family member’s home as her hideout!
“We will come upfront when it’s right. This is not the right time. She will talk to everyone when she is comfortable,” said Ashok about Jashodaben.
Ashok is the eldest in the family, followed by Jashodaben and two younger brothers. He runs a kirana shop in Patan town of North Gujarat. After retiring as government teacher, Jashodaben stays with her brothers.
The fact that Modi was married and had ‘dumped’ his wife in pursuit of bigger things in life has always been out in the open. Jashodaben, however, maintained a low profile, keeping herself restricted to family, school and temples while the political graph and stature of her illustrious husband went from strength to strength. She was married to Narendra Modi when she was 17 and Modi a year older at 18.
Modi’s political rivals have been baying for his blood on various issues, including the fact that he had abandoned his wife. But Jashodaben has never uttered a word against her husband — ever.
