Contrary to expectations, 2018 was a ‘bloody’ Dhuleti as far as medical emergencies in the city are concerned. This year saw a rise of almost 18 per cent in the overall number of emergencies in the city compared to 2017. It also saw the highest number of emergencies registered for both the day of Holi and Dhuleti in the past three years. The number of vehicular trauma incidents across the state almost doubled this year.

Against 456 cases of emergency in 2017, this year saw the emergencies touching 539 on the day of Dhuleti. Emergencies on Holi also surged from 371 in 2017 to 467 in 2018 for the city.

It should be noted that the 108 Emergency Service had in fact predicted a fall in emergencies on Holi and Dhuleti compared to non-festive days. While there was indeed a slight fall on Holi however it more than what was predicted and the number of cases saw a sharp jump on Dhuleti

Against the average 490 cases of emergency on a non-festive day, 2018 saw 467 cases on Holi and 539 on Dhuleti, a 10 per cent rise in emergencies on Dhuleti.

Across the state, a total of 3,571 cases were recorded on the day of Dhuleti and 2,993 on Holi. The average number of emergency calls attended to by the service on a daily basis is 2,958 across the state.

As had been predicted, the highest number of cases were recorded for vehicular trauma (accident) with 804 and 554 cases being recorded on Dhuleti and Holi respectively. The average number of vehicular trauma cases being reported in the state on a normal day is 406 cases. This means number of accidents almost doubled on the day of Dhuleti.

This was followed by complaints of abdominal pain which saw 399 and 337 cases on the day of Dhuleti and Holi respectively.

In Ahmedabad too the vehicular trauma cases took the lion’s share of emergency cases accounting for 77 of the total cases reported on the day of Dhuleti against an average of 47 cases on a normal day. This was followed by 70 cases related to abdominal pain.
