Guj sees 10 times more pvt schools than govt's

In 2 years, state sanctioned 145 govt and 1,500 private primary institutes

The state government gave sanction to open only 145 government schools against 1,500 private schools in just last two years. The detail surfaced from a questionnaire tabled in Gujarat assembly on Friday by the Gujarat government.

MLAs from the Opposition asked the questions to education minister seeking details of schools opened in two years as on date of December 31, 2017.

The government replied that in all 33 districts only 145 government primary schools were sanctioned by the department against 1,496 private schools across the state.

The education minister gave the information in tabular form for each of the 33 districts, and it has come to light that not a single grant-in-aid school was sanctioned.

The government primary schools have been permitted in 16 districts, and Banaskantha topped the list with 60 schools, followed by Kutch with 27, Bhavnagar with 17, Dahod with 16, Panchmahals with 8, Devbhoomi 
Dwarka with 5, Surat with 4, Jamnagar, Sabarkantha, and Gir Somnath with three each; Morbi, Surendranagar and Ahmedabad with two each; and Anand, Narmada and Patan having one each.

Not a single school, government, grant-in-aid or private, was sanctioned in tribal districts.

The government sanctioned 2 private schools in Panchmahals while 7 in Navsari district, all other districts have got increase of private schools in double digits.

Incidentally, Ahmedabad district topped in new private schools with 229 private education institutions opening up, followed by 166 in Surat, 109 in Surendranagar, and 108 schools in Navsari district.

The scenario for secondary and higher secondary schools is also the same as for primary schools.

The government mentioned in its reply to the MLAs that 214 government secondary and 27 higher secondary schools were sanctioned in last two years and against that 644 private secondary and 471 private higher secondary schools were sanctioned in the same period. Not a single grant in aid school in secondary or higher secondary schools was approved.

FEE REGULATION CASE IN SUPREME COURT

  • The state govt has been propagating that the Private School Fees Regulation Act (FRA) would make education less expensive. 
     
  • It’s said the fees in private schools would be on a par with those in govt-aided schools. 
     
  • Pvt schools challenged the Act in SC and the govt is fighting a legal battle.
