File application to delete name from list: EC

During the local government elections in December 2015, many complaints were received from voters stating that their names had been deleted without their knowledge. This had resulted in a political controversy at the time.

Election Commission (EC) has said that it will not delete names of voters from the electoral list unless they apply for the same. The EC is going to hold a three week-long roll revision programme in July, but names of voters will not be deleted suo motu if they are unavailable at the registered address.

Chief electoral officer of Gujarat BB Swain said, “Government employees will be deputed for door-to-door survey of voters under the voters roll revision programme next month. However, they will not delete names of voters who are not available at the registered address. Voters will have to file an application if they want their names to be deleted.”

Meanwhile, transfers of many senior-level administrative officials will take place soon as the Election Commission (EC) gears up for the state Assembly elections due later this year. Chief electoral officer of Gujarat BB Swain has issued orders for the process. 

EC has issued orders for review of returning officers (ROs) and assistant returning officers (AROs). It has written a letter to the state government to transfer ROs and AROs who have completed three years or more at their stations. The transfers will be to the revenue and panchayat departments. 

Mainly, deputy collectors and deputy DDOs work as ROs and mamalatdars as AROs. At present, there are 182 ROs and 380 AROs in the state. The EC takes up this exercise before each election.
