The Driectorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Ahmedabad Zonal Unit, arrested three customs officers and one clearing agent in connection with the import of illicit mobile accessories.

The customs officers allegedly mis-declared goods and there was gross undervaluation.

A DRI release said that branded mobile accessories were imported by Mumbai's M/S Crescent Traders at Mundra Port. A Customs' Special Investigation team had carried out panchnama on September 23, 25, 26, 27 and 29.

The team had also drawn samples and during investigation, it was found by the customs officers that the goods were mis-declared, there was gross undervaluation and they were in violation of Bureau of Indian Standards. These accessories were marks and brands name. Samsung and Sony had visited Container Freight Station and checked the goods. Their report is awaited.

The release also says that one Ankit was working on behalf of Mayur Mehta, who runs M/S Dabke Clearing and Forwarding Pvt Ltd. The company has license of customs brokers at Mumbai port but is not permitted to operate at Mundra. Yet, his man was working as a clearing agent in Mundra.

DRI's primary assessment is that good imported under the mis-declaration has market value of Rs 4 crore. Two customs superintendents M Longanathan and Superintendent Amit Das and Preventive officer Gaurav Kumar, instead of taking action for the violation of the rules and duty evasion, had allowed the consignment to leave the customs area.

When the DRI carried out searches at Mumbai base importers office, it was run from a residential area and the firm was non-existent at the given address. In this connection, two superintendents and one preventive officer and private person was arrested under the various sections of the Customs Act.
