Congress MLAs to get lessons in assembly proceedings, rules

They will also be given insights into the importance of social media in reaching out to people

The Congress's three-day workshop to train its newly elected MLAs on assembly and parliamentary proceedings will kick-off in Kheda from Friday, the party said.

The 77 Congress MLAs will be familiarised with rules related to the assembly, opposition's role in democracy, among other important aspects about the functioning of the assembly at the three-day workshop. They will also be given insights into the importance of social media in reaching out to people.

A Congress official said the MLAs, especially the newly elected ones, will be taught about Gujarat's parliamentary history, different ways to raise questions in legislative assembly, and different assembly committees and their functioning, at the workshop.

"The workshop will cover topics such as the art of asking questions, rights of MLAs in the assembly and their duties, discussion on bills and other parliamentary procedures, interaction with media, besides others," he said.

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, party's Gujarat in-charge Ashok Gehlot, party general secretary Madhusudan Mistry, besides the entire local leadership of the party in the state, will also take part in the workshop. Experts from PRS Legislative Research and Jawaharlal Nehru Leadership Institute will also address the participants, Gujarat Congr-ess said. Buoyed by its performance in the December assembly elections, when it won 77 seats, its best performance in more than 22 years, the Congress is gearing up to corner the BJP government, which has 99 MLAs, in the assembly.
