Congress, BJP MLAs cross swords over OBC, SC welfare

Government vouches for budget proposals worth Rs 150 crore for backward communities

BJP and Congress MLAs in Gujarat assembly exchanged heated arguments on Monday over the issue of the welfare of the backward community. The Congress MLAs lashed out at government alleging insufficient budgetary allocations, partiality and ignorance for backward communities like OBCs and SC/STs. The debate on budget demands by social justice and empowerment was held during the day and the minister gave reply.

Congress senior MLA Kunverji Bavaliya raised to speak on the issue and said that when Chimanbhai Patel was the chief minister of state, he formed the OBC commission in state with implementing 27% reservation for them and 148 communities had been included in the category.

He alleged that the present Gujarat government started recruiting people on outsourcing and hence the chances of OBC community people faded.

Chotila MLA Rujtvik Makwana took a jibe at present government by saying that when one open category minister was sulking over less important portfolios and was offered but when an OBC minister registered his dissentment, he was not heard and did not come for assembly session thereafter.

OBC leader and Radhanpur MLA Alpesh Thakor said that central government gave money as loans to the youth of OBC community but the state government did not took the guarantee on behalf of the poor youth. Deputy leader of opposition Shailesh Parmar and MLA Naushad Solanki raised the issue of the untouchability and expenditure of less fund for the celebration of anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

BJP MLA from Vejalpur Kishor Chauhan raised the issue that the Gujarat government should form a separate department for OBCs and appoint a separate minister for the same.

Replying to the opinion and issues raised by members of the house, the minister of state for social justice and empowerment said, "The government has established special atrocity courts to preserve the rights of SC community and has given a number of benefits to the people from backward communities under various schemes."

First timer BJP MLA and Gujarati film actor Hitu Kanodia raised sentimental issue of plight of SC/STs in Gujarat and said that both the parties worked hard and allocated budget for their welfare.  However, Dalit became the synonym of distresssed and under priviledged people and all party should raise from political rivalry and should give them respectful life.
