Traffic woes are throwing Ahmedabad out of gear. Leader of opposition of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Dinesh Sharma has alleged that the civic body is yet to chalk out a plan to resolve the issue.

Despite framing a ‘no parking’ policy for places within 50 mt of crossroads, people park their vehicles at these restricted zones. “There are many buildings, commercial complexes, hospitals and hotels which don’t have parking spaces. All these buildings have received permission from authorities after paying impact fees. Despite announcements being made about the no parking policy, no one is following it,” said Sharma.

“During budget announcement, the standing chairman also announced about having no left turns. Even, this policy is not being followed,” added Sharma. Interestingly, AMC has also decided to remove the left turns from the major junctions. “They haven’t implemented the ‘no left turn’ policy,” alleged Sharma.

AMC had constructed a parking space at Prahladnagar in 2015. However, it was removed within a month because it caused a lot of inconveniences and the road had to narrowed down.

The civic body has constructed two multi-storeyed parking lots at Kankaria and Navrangpura. However, both the projects failed to receive any good response. The Navrangpura parking was constructed to cater the need of visitors at CG Road. “It is too far from the CG Road. I can park my vehicle in front of the shops on the road. There is no need to go so far just for parking,” said Sandeep Patel.

Pravin Patel, standing committee chairman, said they are looking into the matter and shall soon make another ‘no left turn’ announcement.
