Ambulance driver suffers heart attack, vehicle skids off flyover

The ambulance, ferrying six persons and a body, went off the bridge after the driver suffered from a cardiac arrest and lost control; the driver and another passenger died on the spot

In a tragic accident, two people were killed and five others sustained injuries when an ambulance drove off the flyover on the Bagodara highway near Ramnagar Patila, in Bavla on Tuesday morning, police said. The ambulance, carrying a body and six other people, skidded off the bridge when the driver lost control after suffering from a heart attack.

The driver lost control following which the ambulance broke the railing and drove off killing two, including the driver and another man

On hearing the cries of passengers, people of nearby village reached the accident spot. On getting information senior police officials also reached the accident site and took stock of the situation.

The cops with the help of villagers rescued the passengers. All other injured passengers were rushed to district hospital in the ambulance and other vehicles stationed in the vicinity.

Prahalad Raval, sub-inspector of Bavla police station, said, “It was revealed during the investigation that the driver of ambulance had suffered heart attack after which he lost control over vehicle.”

According to police, late on Monday night a woman from Haran village in Chotila was brought to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for treatment. 

She died on Tuesday morning during the treatment after which her relatives were taking the body back to the village when the accident took place. 

The deceased have been identified Gansham bhai and unidentified driver.  

The injured were later shifted to VS Hospital. A case of accident has been registered at Bavla police station.

This is the second such accident in last one week. On June 29, a 50-year-old woman of Mehsana was killed while on her way to UN Mehta Hospital for treatment after the 108 ambulance carrying her rammed into the wall of Jantanagar BRTS stop. 

As per the complainant, it was the negligence of the driver and his over-speeding which led to the accident.
