The city has been steadily marching towards development and has set several examples by being a smart city and India's only heritage city. Now, a study of Ahmedabad's public transportation and urban planning is going to be discussed at a UN Habitat meet to be held in Fukuoka, Japan in July-August, 2018.

Fukuoka city is going to host its 12th Asian-Pacific City Summit under the theme of 'Sustainable Cities and Communities'. By inter-city collaboration, participating cities will showcase their best examples of how urban issues have been solved. It is to be noted that only five cities have been selected to showcase their implemented, successful urban projects. Presentation of the case study will be given by the mayor of the respective cities.

The introduction of BRTS enhanced accessibility, connectivity, social inclusiveness and improved the environmental quality, which covers five of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"Urbanisation is growing rapidly and as per an estimate, by 2050 around 70 per cent of the world population will be staying in urban cities. For that, the existing cities need better and sustainable infrastructure. Our BRTS is the best example for this," said mayor Gautam Shah.

"It is a matter of pride that we will discuss the BRTS system which is used by 1.5 lakh people daily, at the UN Habitat meet," he said.

Other than Ahmedabad, Shenzhen, Fukuoka, Melbourne, Surabaya will exhibit their best practice models, where 30 other cities from 13 different countries will be present as the audience.

The main aim of the event is to address complex urban issues, obtain ideas and solutions for the future of urban development through latest technology. Other than the government organisations, corporate giants are also expected to showcase their innovations.
