Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is set to open a women's gym in Ghatlodia, The gym will have state-of-the-art facilities, including sauna and spa, besides a physiotherapy centre, a reading room and shower rooms. This is first-of-its-kind initiative by the civic body. The inauguration is scheduled for March 17.
"We haven't decided the price for sauna and spa yet. But one can avail gym facilities by paying hundred rupees a month," said Jatin Patel, Road and Building Chairman, AMC.
"Timings of the gym are decided keeping in mind the home makers, students and working women. The gym will be open from morning to evening. The entire unit is constructed keeping in mind the privacy of women." The gym can accommodate as many as 55 people at a time.
Citizen lauded the new initiative, especially the flexible timings of the new gym. "This is great. I mean there are swimming pools by the AMC, with limited time slots for women. It's good that AMC has thought about women keeping in mind timings of professionals and home makers," said Ritika Patel, a resident of Ghatlodia.
The reading room in the gym can host as many as 150 people and the facility is free of charge. "There are lots of students who are preparing for competitive exams," said Patel. "For them this can be a proper place where they can sit and prepare. There is also space allotted for the readers who wants to read newspapers and magazine."
The gym also has solar power-run water coolers. "As of now, there is no system of rain water harvesting but that is on our mind. Starting this monsoon, we will store rainwater in the underground tank built here," added Patel.
The civic body took 15 months to construct the gym complex, and the funds came from grants of local MPs, MLAs and local councillors. Though the gym will be open to public from this week, the sauna and spa facilities will start from April.
