Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And, no good thing ever dies. This has come true for a resident of Satellite when, against all odds, she made an effort to transplant four trees just two months ago.

The experts and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) firmly believed that the trees would not survive. But, against all odds, two out of four trees survived.

Last January, when Jolly Shah saw two trees were about to be chopped for an upcoming building project in an open plot near her house, she spoke to officials of the AMC and activists from Surat.

"I have seen the transplantation process on the Ahmedabad University campus. I'm happy that two trees have survived, and new leaves have sprouted," said Shah, who initiated the scientific process in January.

"The trees were on the verge of death when we transplanted them. The roots got partially damaged because of the digging. We, however, took a risk. AMC has helped us with machines at that time," said Shah.

"We didn't use machines for the transplantation. They were transplanted in a traditional way by digging the ground and putting the tree in. But, we had to monitor the process. Authorities at the Ahmedabad University are happy to accept such 'developed' trees," she said.

There were four trees which were transplanted; two trees of Millettia pinnata (kanji) have been survived. The other two trees, neem and polyalthia (asopalav), were transplanted. According to Shah, the other two trees have not dried up, but there are no new leaves on them.

According to experts, there is 30% success ratio of tree transplants in India. The success rate is 70% in developed nations.

...& ANALYSIS

It takes years to grow a tree and minutes to cut it down. AMC had chopped more than 200 trees along the BRTS corridor and more than 2000 trees will be felled phase wise for the for the Metro route. There are many enthusiasts who are ready to take responsibility for a tree and nurture them. Now, the onus is on the AMC to create some mechanism to make the tree cover stronger.
