It was perhaps the longest ten minutes of his life, but at the end of it, Emergency Medical Technician with the 108 Emergency Service Desur Bhuva did hold not one but two bundles of joy in his hand. For, Desur Bhuva, 23, an EMT and his colleague Naresh Chauhan helped deliver twins in an ambulance on January 28.

What set this delivery apart from the many that sometimes take place in an ambulance is that this was breech birth.

Breech birth refers to the position of a baby during delivery when the legs (instead of the head) is delivered first.

Bhuva said his ambulance was dispatched to Laminagar Yadav Nagar in Vastrapur to attend to one Jayshreeben Vishwakarma. "We got the pregnant patient into the ambulance but soon realised that she had gone into labour and was about to deliver. I asked my pilot to come and help me. We delivered the first child (a boy) within five minutes," said Bhuva.

However, for Bhuva who has had experience delivering some babies, the real trouble began after that. "The patient had told me that she was pregnant with twins. So the second baby was not a surprise. But what came as a surprise was that the second baby (a girl) was in breech birth position," said Bhuva.

He said though he had delivered babies before and that too in an ambulance, this was the first time that he had to handle a breech birth. "I was nervous. This was the first time I was going to handle a breech birth. I wondered what would come first the baby or the placenta. Thankfully the baby answered the question for me when I saw its legs and from there on it was smooth," said Bhuva recounting the experience.

He said the baby girl too was delivered safely. "Initially her vitals were weak but she soon recovered. The mother and children were then rushed to the hospital," said Bhuva. He said the women had expected to undergo a cesarean section since she was carrying twins. Incidentally, Bhuva met the mother at the hospital two days later when he was on another emergency call. "I asked her how she was. She had recovered and her babies were doing fine too," he said.
