First meeting of panel on boosting girls' education held

The Central Advisory Board of Education's sub-committee on boosting girls' education today held its first meeting where issues related to their safety, lack of toilets and other basic necessities were discussed.

Its chairman and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari sought cooperation of all stakeholders to address the issues.

"To fix shortcomings in the system and overcome the mistakes, cooperation of all the stakeholders including that of teachers are necessary," Srihari said in a release.

"Lack of safety in regular and residential schools and hostels are also resulting in drop in number of girl students.

A report suggesting various initiatives on this will be submitted to the Centre," said the release.

The Deputy Chief Minister also put forth various pro-education initiatives of the Telangana government before the panel.

The committee's next meeting is scheduled for March 31 in Guwahati in Assam.

The sub-committee was set up by the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry to look into issues of girl's education and to examine the reasons for low participation of girls in education, including the socio-economic factors with resultant gender bias, and suggest ways to reduce gender disparity so as to achieve better gender parity index.

The sub-committee, which was formed in February this year, will hold consultations with central and state governments and other stakeholders and submit its report to the Centre within a year.
