A team of 27 students from Dwarkadas J Sanghvi (DJ Sanghvi) College of Engineering, Mumbai will be displaying their go-kart on February 16, Thursday in their college premises. The team, named DJS Karting, participated in two major go-karting championships in January and ranked number five.

Speaking about the first go-kart prepared by the students, team leader Shreyans Sethia said, “We started conceptualising the car in January 2016. We began our research work from scratch, since it was the first time our college was participating in making a go-kart and we did not have any ex-students’ guidance for it. The design and fabrication of the car was personally created by the students by experimenting with different parts of the car.”

When they first participated in a National Kart Racing Championship (NKRC)  in October 2016, they cleared the technical inspection and design evaluation round.

After the first round, they had to back out from the competition because of a failure in the gearbox. But instead of being demotivated, the students redesigned the car model for the next competition.

Jay Sanghrajka, 20, a third-year student and one of the drivers, said, “From October to December 2016, we reworked the car and changed a few technical details. We reduced the weight of the engine and came up with a new transmission system in it. It was an unexpected incident. Even after qualifying for the second final round, we had to back out. But the incident helped us learn more.”

The major highlights of the car include a fire sensor, infra-red sensor on the display screen of the car, and an app developed to track the speed and fire by the chief, who co-ordinates with the driver during the race. The body of the car was designed and manufactured by the team.

Speaking about the funding for the car, Harshraj Surve, 21, marketing head, said, “We received funds in cash and in kind through sponsors. Initially, for a few months, the team members contributed over Rs 55,000 from their own pocket to start working on the car. The college will be giving us basic funds for the project.”

He added: “The competitions helped us a lot to learn and implement the knowledge in a practical way. For the upcoming competitions, we will be helping our juniors and would also like to extend our help to other college students who want to make go-karts.”
