Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today called for convergence of technology and judicial system and urged law students to be more abreast with new age crimes.

"There is need for convergence of technology. Law students must be more abreast with new age crimes such as cyber crime, financial crime and focus more on research in legal education," he said inaugurating the permanent campus of National Law University and Judicial Academy(NLUJA), Assam at Amingaon in Kamrup district.

NLUJA will usher a new era in the domain of legal education in the state and Guwahati will emerge as a legal education hub of the North East, he said.

Members of the judiciary, he said, must ensure emancipation of the last man as this will enhance people's faith in the democratic system and help in establishing the rule of law.

Sonowal also urged the judiciary to create an environment where citizens become more aware about the legal system and make them more conscious about their rights.

Supreme Court judge Justice J Chelameswar said Indian democracy is in a nascent state and the younger generation will have to play a significant role to make people understand the content of constitutional culture

The institute has been set up under National Law University and Judicial Academy Act, 2009 and is the only National Law University in the North East.

Judges of Supreme Court of India Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Justice Amitava Roy, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and the Chancellor of National Law University Justice Ajit Singh were present among others.
