The application process for the first-year MBA and MMS courses for 2017 ended on Monday.

According to data, the ratio of management seats to number of applicants is 1:3. As per the data available with the Directorate of Technical Education(DTE), approximately 84,000 students applied for around 20,000 seats across management colleges in the State until 3 pm on Monday.

"We have received around 84,000 applications this year. The number has substantially gone up as compared to last year which saw close to 73,000 applications. This is a good sign for management courses as it proves that the demand has increased for MBA and MMS in the state," said Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director, DTE.

In 2015, close to 60,000 students had registered for around 30,000 seats across 150 plus colleges in the state. While the exact number of seats available this year is still not clear, Meshram said that it would be more or less the same as 2016 when there were 24,000 seats. "We are yet to collate the information about how many seats are surrendered but there will be approximately four aspirants competing for every seat," he added.

Experts attribute the trend of increase in demand to the good job market in the country. "In 2014-15 the market conditions were not so good as a result of which there were less takers in those two years. The market seems to have picked up which is evident from the rising demand. This is a positive sign," said Dr Manoj Bhide, Director, Sydenham Institute of Management Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship Education (SIMSREE).

Bhide said that at elite management institutes like theirs, the cut-off has been on the higher side for the last few years. "Our cut-off was 99.6% last year. Mostly, students who have professional work experience come to us as it is an essential pre-requisite for post graduate management education" he added.

The online Common Entrance Test for MBA and MMS would be conducted by the DTE on March 4 and March 5 this year, and the results will be announced on March 10, 2017.
