How can we foster ties between India and the UK in the education sector?

Having joint research projects is very important. —like we have one with the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bengaluru. The movement of students from India to Britain and vice versa is also very important. Introducing joint courses between the universities of India and Britain would be a great development. We have very good links with Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, some Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). With new technology having online courses that reach around the world would also help.

What makes the University of Edinburgh stand apart?

It is old, comprehensive and has a wide range of subjects. We have different types of courses in medicine, engineering, languages and so on. We have 600 groups for our undergraduate program, which is very flexible, and at the same time we can build research partnerships for big research problems that matter to the world such as environment, diseases coming from animals to humans, and so on. Our university is popular for courses in medicine, computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, robotics, languages and linguistics.

What are the job and internship opportunities?

We are working hard to increase the internship opportunities. Several top multi-national employers have ranked the University very high. In fact, we were ranked 12th by the Times Higher Educational Supplement in 2015 and 2016 for clinical and preclinical medicine and health.

What is the role of technology in education?

If you have an online course you can reach out to a larger audience. Our university has reached two and quarter million learners with Massive open online course (MOOCs). Seven per cent of them are in India. This translates as 1,50,000 overall enrollments and 75, 000 active participants across all courses on all platforms. Online courses allow students to study at their own speed in their own location. We have more than 70 online Masters courses especially in medicine and law, and about 37 MOOCS that are short-duration courses. The most popular MOOCs from our University were the ‘Introduction to Philosophy’ and most completed one was about ‘Acquired Nutrition’. We forged a partnership with EdX in 2016. India has ranked second and third highest for participant’s country of enrolment on the two most popular courses – ‘Introduction to Marketing’ and ‘Economic Democracy: The Co-operative Alternative’ - 10% and 7% of overall enrolments respectively.
