MBA grad held for gold theft

A 34-year-old MBA graduate, who resorted to robbing gold jewellery stores in the city to make a quick buck was arrested by the Jayanagar police.

The arrested, Prabhu Kanakaratnam, is a resident of Yelahanka and has an MBA degree from the University of Derby in the United Kingdom.

He is also an alumnus of MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology in the city, the police
said.

According to police, After his higher studies abroad, Prabhu came to India in 2010. He began taking care of his family business but suffered losses in it. He then started a restaurant in the city. When this venture also failed, he joined a software

In 2017, Prabhu was admitted to a hospital after he complained of breathing problem.

The doctors advised him of at least seven months' rest.

Upset about his poor health and financial status, Prabhu decided to make a quick buck. He started stealing gold jewellery from showrooms for this.

Posing as a customer, Prabhu stole a 60 gm chain from Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers in Jayanagar, after diverting the store salesman's attention. But his entire act was caught on a CCTV camera, the police said.

The jeweller lodged a complaint and based on the CCTV's footage, the Jayanagar police arrested Prabhu.

After his arrest and further interrogation, the police learnt that he had also stolen gold jewellery in a similar manner from Joyalukkas in Malleswaram.

The stolen jewellery was recovered from him.Prabhu is single and lives with his mother, who was reportedly unaware of her son's wrongdoings.

She is in a state of shock and is unable to believe that her son could commit such thefts, a senior police officer said.
