Customs officer at KIA under CBI scanner

A Customs Superintendent at the Kempegowda International Airport at Bengaluru is under the CBI scanner for possessing disproportionate assets that are 97.34% above his known sources of income.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case against Attar Mohd Shafiulla on Wednesday under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

According to the FIR, Shafiullah is claimed to have amassed Rs 27.10 lakh worth assets beyond his known sources of income during 2009 and 2018, "which cannot be satisfactorily accounted for".

He joined the Department of Central Excise as inspector in 1992 and is currently working as superintendent. He had held sensitive postings and is "involved in corrupt activities, especially after he got a promotion as superintendent", the FIR stated. His wife is a homemaker.

The FIR claimed that Shafiulla and his family members were in possession of movable and immovable assets worth Rs 1.81 lakh prior to 2009. It rose to 13.36 lakh as on 1 March 2018.

It came to light that between 2009 and 2018, Shafiullah and his family received a total income of Rs 27.84 lakh. The total expenditure of his family was pegged at Rs 50.09 lakh.
