Customs sleuths nab 4 gold smugglers in 5 days

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs at the Kempegowda International Airport arrested four passengers, all from Kozhikode in Kerala, and recovered gold worth Rs 93 lakh that they tried to smuggle over the past five days.

The sleuths picked up Nalakam Paramba Mohammed Rafeeque, 27, as soon as he landed at KIA from Dubai on Wednesday. His body language gave him away, the sleuths said. Growing suspicious of his body language, the sleuths frisked him. They recovered 728 g of gold worth Rs 22.8 lakh concealed in the form of powder mixed with soil and chemicals hidden in his waist belt.

Earlier, in a similar fashion, another passenger identified as Mustafa Pallipurayl, 38, was nabbed after he landed at the KIA from Sarjah on Tuesday. The sleuths recovered gold in the form of powder mixed with soil and chemicals concealed in waist belt too, weighing a little more than 1 kg that was valued at Rs 31.46 lakh.

The officials on the same day, arrested Jamaludeen, 40, and recovered 1 kg of gold valued at Rs 31.35, again, concealed in the form of dust mixed with soil and chemicals, concealed in his waist belt.

The Customs officials also arrested Shamsudheen, 34, and recovered 217 g of gold valued at Rs 6.8 lakh that was disguised as a bracelet and buckle, fixed to his waist belt.
