Veteran actor Shammi passes away

Veteran actor Shammi, popularly known as Shammi Aunty, and remembered for her roles as a mother and aunt in several films and the popular sitcom 'Dekh Bhai Dekh' and 'Shriman Shrimati', died in Mumbai on Monday night.

She was 89. She passed away at her Juhu Circle home.

The last rites were performed at the Oshiwara crematorium on Tuesday.

Shammi, whose real name was Nargis, was a Parsi and the former wife of legendary Bollywood filmmaker, late Sultan Ahmed.

"Prayers and fond remembrances for Shammi Aunty .. so dear to us as a family .. lost to us today," Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

Bachchan also posted some of her photos and wrote, "..some early pictures as a young entrant to films .. and one with Nargis ji at an event; Shammi Aunty's real name was also Nargis!"

Her famous films as a supporting actor included 'Half Ticket' starring Kishore Kumar and Pran, 'Halaku', 'Samaj Ko Badal Dal'o and films with Rajesh Khanna like 'The Train', 'Red Rose', 'Aancha'l, 'Kudrat',' Awara Baap' and 'Swarg'.

She also featured in several Bollywood films, including 'Jab Jab Phool Khile' (1965),' Ittefaq' (1969), 'The Burning Train' (1980), 'Arth' (1982), 'Hum' (1991), 'Khuda Gawah' (1992), 'Coolie No. 1' (1995) and 'Hum Saath Saath Hain '(1999).

Her most recent appearance was in the movie 'Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi' in 2013.

"Shammi, aunty to me and a great actor of yesteryears passed away today. She was my mother's dear friend and someone we all loved very much. May her soul rest in peace and her laughter and contagious smile rock the heavens. Be at peace with your friends," tweeted Priya Dutt, the daughter of late Sunil Dutt and late Nargis.

"Bringing a smile to our faces, for years brightening up the screen Shammi Ji left us with innumerable memories. My condolences to her loved ones. Om Shanti" tweeted Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani.
