Breaking down the Oscars winners

Oscars awards, the highest honours in the global film industry, were handed out on Sunday at a glittering ceremony held in Hollywood. The award ceremony was hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

Best Picture – The Shape of Water

American romantic fantasy drama ‘The Shape of Water’ directed by Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy) bagged the Best Picture of 2017. 'Call Me by Your Name Name', 'Darkest Hour', 'Dunkirk', 'Get Out', 'Lady Bird', 'Phantom Thread', 'The Post' and 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' were the other films that were in the race along with 'The Shape of Water'.

Best Director - Guillermo del Toro, 'The Shape of Water'

Mexican film director Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim, Hellboy II: The Golden Army) also won the coveted Best Director award at the Oscars. This is the director's first Oscars win, while 'Pan's Labyrinth' was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film in 2007.

Best Actor (Male) – Darkest Hour

Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight, Bram Stoker's Dracula) bagged the Best Actor award this year for his role in 'Darkest Hour'. Timothee Chalamet for 'Call Me By Your Name', Daniel Day-Lewis for 'Phantom Thread', Denzel Washington for 'Roman J. Israel', Esq and Daniel Kaluuya for 'Get Out' were the other actors who bagged nominations for the award.

Best Actor (Female) - Frances McDormand

For her acting in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Frances McDormand (Fargo, Hail, Ceaser!) won the Best Lead Actress award in for the year 2017. Sally Hawkins for 'The Shape of Water', Margot Robbie for 'I, Tonya', Saoirse Ronan for 'Lady Bird' and Meryl Streep for 'The Post' were the other actors who bagged nominations for the award.

Best Actor in Supporting Role (Male) – Sam Rockwell

49-year-old Sam Rockwell (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Frost/Nixon) and Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, War for the Planet of the Apes) were nominated for the Best Actor in Supporting Role for their performance in 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri'. However, Sam Rockwell bagged the award. Willem Dafoe for 'The Florida Project', Richard Jenkins for 'The Shape of Water' and Christopher Plummer for 'All The Money in the World' were the other actors who bagged nominations for the award.

Best Actor in Supporting Role (Female) – Allison Janney

Versatile actor Allison Brooks Janney (Finding Nemo, Mr. Peabody & Sherman) won the Best Actor in Supporting Role (Female) category for her role in 'I, Tonya'. Lesley Manville for 'Phantom Thread', Laurie Metcalf for 'Lady Bird', Octavia Spencer for 'The Shape of Water' and Mary J. Blige for 'Mudbound' were the other actors who bagged nominations for the award.

Best Original Screenplay – Get Out

Director Jordan Peele’s horror thriller 'Get Out' bagged the Best Original Screenplay award. It stars Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, and Catherine Keener in the significant roles. The movie is about a black man who uncovers a disturbing secret when he meets the family of his white girlfriend.

Best Adapted Screenplay – Call Me By Your Name

'Call Me By Your Name', the final instalment in Guadagnino's thematic 'Desire' trilogy, following 'I Am Love' and 'A Bigger Splash' won the Best Adapted Screenplay Award. The movie is based on a 2007 novel by Andre Aciman. It is directed by Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love) and written by James Ivory (A Room with a View, Shakespeare Wallah).

Best Animated Film – Coco

Coco won the Best Film Award in the animated category for this year's Oscars. The story deals with a boy who is accidentally transported to the land of the dead, where he seeks the help of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family among the living. It is directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3).

Best Documentary Film - Icarus

The Best Documentary film was given to 'Icarus', which was directed by Bryan Fogel (Jewtopia). The documentary digs into the option of doping to win an amateur cycling race and happening upon a major international doping scandal.

Best Foreign Language Film - "A Fantastic Woman" – Chile

A Fantastic Woman, directed by Chilean director Sebastian Lelio (Gloria), won the award for the Best Foreign Language Film. The film follows the story of Marina, who is forced to contend with forces greater than herself when her older lover, Orlando, dies of a sickness.

Original Song - "Remember Me" - Coco

Alongside winning the Best Animated Film award, 'Coco' also managed to bag the 'Best Original Song' award.

Best Original Score - Alexandre Desplat, 'The Shape of Water'

French composer Alexandre Desplat (Godzilla, Zero Dark Thirty) won the Best Original Score for 'The Shape of Water'. His other wins and nominations include 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' (won), 'The King's Speech' and 'Argo' (nominated).

Best Production Design - The Shape of Water

'The Shape of Water' walked away with 4 Oscars win out of a monumental 13 nominations, the highest of all nominated features in this year's ceremony. The Best Production Design award includes all elements of art direction. Other nominees included 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Blade Runner 2049'.

Best Cinematography - Blade Runner 2049

Roger A. Deakins, an industry veteran with films like 'The Shawshank Redemption' , 'No Country for Old Men', 'Skyfall' and 'Fargo' under his belt, won his first ever Oscar for Best Cinematography for 'Blade Runner 2049', the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 neo-Noir film 'Blade Runner'. Other nominees included 'Darkest Hour', 'Dunkirk', 'Mudbound' and 'The Shape of Water'.

Best Visual Effects - Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2019 bagged two of the 5 nominations it bagged in this year's Oscars. John Nelson (Gladiator, I, Robot, Iron Man), Gerd Nefzer, Paul Lambert and Richard R. Hoover (Armageddon, Valkyrie) were nominated for the award. Other nominees included 'Kong: Skull Island', 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' and 'War for the Planet of the Apes'.

Best Sound Mixing/Editing - Dunkirk

Richard King and Alex Gibson won the award for Best Sound Editing and Mark Weingarten, Gregg Landaker and Gary A. Rizzo won the award for Best Sound Mixing for Christopher Nolan's WW2 drama film 'Dunkirk'. All 5 of the nominees are frequent collaborators with Nolan, having worked on Interstellar and The Dark Knight trilogy, among others. Other nominees included 'Baby Driver', 'Blade Runner 2049' 'The Shape of Water' and 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi'.

Best Film Editing - Dunkirk

Dunkirk scored 3 wins at this year's Oscars, with Lee Smith (RoboCop 2, Batman Begins), another frequent collaborator with Nolan, earning the film the award for Best Editing. Other nominees included 'Baby Driver', 'I, Tonya', 'The Shape of Water' and 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri'.
