Biffes opens tomorrow with human rights focus

For lovers of world cinema, it's that happy time of the year again. The 10th edition of the Bengaluru International Film Festival (Biffes) opens on Friday.

The venue is Orion Mall in Rajajinagar, and the festival is on till March 1. Some events are slated at Dr Raj Bhavan in Chamarajpet as well.

The theme this year is 'Human rights and social justice'. About 800 films are participating in the festival, with about 200 in the competition category.

Among the guests are 10 directors from Asia and 13 from other parts of the world.

In the competition category, 77 films are in Kannada, 65 in other Indian languages, and 50 in other Asian languages.

N Vidyashankar, artistic director for the festival, said the entries were finalised by a national committee comprising Girish Kasaravalli, Saibal Chatterjee (Delhi), Premendra Mazumder (Kolkata) and Krishna Prasad from Mysuru.

"They have an in-depth understanding of what fits into each category," Vidyashankar said.

The documentary section will have 10 to 12 films. "This is curated by Reena Mohan, well-known film critic from Delhi," he told Metrolife.
