Basketball stadium in Malleswaram to open on Feb 25

An indoor basketball stadium of international standards will open in Malleswaram on February 25.

The work on the Rs 7.21-crore  stadium began in 2009 and is nearing completion, said  Narasimhamurthy, assistant  executive engineer, BBMP.  

Expressing happiness at the development, Dilip Gurumoorthy, a member of India's basketball team at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, said the purpose of building the stadium was to popularise the sport.  He hoped that with the wooden flooring on the court, players would not suffer broken knees as he and his peers did while playing on the hard court.

The land on which the stadium is being built hosted the Beagles Basketball Club, an outdoor facility which was in use for over four decades.

The stadium also has a running track and a gym.  It has the wooden flooring of about 18,000 sq feet.
