JD (U) takes U-turn, fields nominee for Bihar bypoll

Last Updated 19 February 2018, 14:39 IST

A week after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that his party won't contest on any of the seats in the ensuing bypolls, the JD (U) has fielded its candidate for the Jehanabad Assembly seat.

The party announced the candidature of Abhiram Sharma, who earlier represented Jehanabad from 2010 to 2015, but was denied ticket in the 2015 Assembly polls as the seat was allocated to the RJD, then an ally of the JD (U).

RJD nominee Mundrika Singh Yadav won from here but his untimely demise has led to the bypoll. The RJD has fielded his son Suday Yadav against NDA nominee Abhiram.

Meanwhile, the BJP has announced the name of former MP Pradip Singh's candidature for the Araria Lok Sabha constituency. This parliamentary seat in the Muslim-dominated area fell vacant after the death of RJD MP and former Union minister Mohammad Taslimuddin last year. His son, Sarfaraz Alam, who was a JD (U) MLA, quit Nitish's outfit and resigned as a legislator before joining the RJD last week. Lalu Prasad has fielded him as the party nominee for the Lok Sabha bypoll.

The BJP has announced the candidature of Rinki Rani Devi for the Bhabua Assembly seat. She is the widow of BJP MLA Anand Bhushan Pandey. The RJD has left the Bhabua seat for the Congress which will announce its nominee in a day or two.

The voting in all the three constituencies - one Lok Sabha and two Assembly seats - will take place on March 11. The counting of votes will take place on March 14.
