Iranian Prez Rouhani offers prayers at Mecca Masjid

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who is on a three-day tour of India, visited the historical Mecca Masjid in the old city area here on Friday and addressed a gathering with a message for Shia-Sunni unity.

On the second day of his visit, Rouhani become one among the commoners in offering prayers at the 17th century mosque in the city.

Accompanied by ministers and senior officials he offered 'namaz'.

Local MP and MIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mohammad Ali and a few other MIM legislators also participated in the Friday prayers.

Earlier, Moulana Rizwan Qureshi, the imam of the mosque delivered sermons. The imam, during his sermon, prayed for the safety of Muslims across the world, especially in Palestine, Syria and Yemen.

After prayers, Rouhani greeted the Muslims of India and said that his visit to Mecca Masjid is symbolic to unity among Muslims.

"If anyone trying to separate the community tell them to unite, and spread love in the community," he said.

He reminded everyone that the Prophet has taught Muslims to love and pray for all other human beings and not just for Muslims.

In the morning, accompanied by members of the Iranian delegation and Telangana government officials, Rouhani visited the Golconda Fort, built during the reign of the Qutub Shahi dynasty that ruled the Hyderabad region for 170 years in the 16th and 17th century.

He was briefed about the historic site by the officials.

A set of seven tombs, built in Iranian architectural style, are undergoing restoration works.

The Rs 100 core restoration project is being executed by the Aga Khan Foundation's Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC).
