Midday meal workers' protest paralyses traffic

Last Updated 10 February 2018, 08:15 IST

A rally by midday meal workers from the Kranthiveera Sangolli Rayanna railway station to Freedom Park paralysed traffic in the area, severely inconveniencing commuters.

Traffic between Anand Rao Circle  and KR Circle was blocked as police re-routed vehicles through other roads. Race Course Road, Vidhana Soudha, Majestic bus station, Seshadripuram Road and surrounding thoroughfares were choked, bringing traffic movement to a grinding halt.

Midday meal workers, who converged in thousands, demanded their salaries be hiked to Rs 18,000. They absented from work for the past eight days, triggering severe disruptions in supplying food to schoolchildren. The village assistants are demanding an upgrade of status to Group D workers, which would qualify them for a pay hike.
