112 students to get gold medalat BU's 53rd convocation

About 112 students will receive gold medals and 268 will be given cash prizes at the 53rd convocation ceremony of the Bangalore University on Thursday.

As usual, girls far outnumbered boys in grabbing the medals and cash prizes.

In addition, 23,846 students have cleared their courses with distinction; 19,704 have got first class; 6,168 secured second class; and 5,904 scraped through with a pass score. All of them will receive their degrees at the function, to be held in the Central College campus, where 158 students will also be given their PhD certificates.

University vice chancellor in-charge V Sudesh told a press conference that 55,780 students will graduate this year.

Thursday's function will be presided over by Governor Vajubhai Vala and Minister for Higher Education Basavaraj Rayareddy. Former chairman of the Indian Space research Organisation A S Kiran Kumar will deliver the convocation address.

Sai Jyoti Sanmathi, who finished her BCom at VVS First Grade College for Women, has received nine cash prizes, the vice chancellor in-charge said. Bhagyalakshmi, recipient of three gold medals for MCom from Presidency College, said her hard work has paid off.

Bhagyalakshmi continued to pursue her masters after her marriage and commuted from Electronics City to Hebbal to attend classes. "I spent a lot of time travelling," she said. She also had a tough time balancing studies with family life.

The varsity has spent Rs 4.8 lakh on gold medals for 79 first rank holders and a further Rs 2 lakh for cash prizes, Sudesh said.
