Why a new road in Jakkur, residents ask

Last Updated 06 February 2018, 18:55 IST

Citizens living in Jakkur have opposed the construction of a new road near the Government Flying Training School (GFTS).

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to build a new road from Ballari road cutting through the flying school.

Palike has asked for 3 acres of land for the road project.

Although the Jakkur plantation road already exists near the GKVK layout, the civic body's move to build another road in the same area has irked the residents. The plantation road ends at the Shobha Ultima campus, near the ITC Garden Enclave.

Sanjeev Dyamannavar, an urban rail expert felt there was no need for a new road as the GKVK layout is situated right next to the Enclave and the same road could be extended further instead of building a new one, he said.

Dyamannavar said that the plantation road was specifically built to facilitate the residents of Shobha Ultima campus, and ITC Garden enclave. He wondered why the BBMP plans to build another road when there is one already.

Other than the BBMP's plan, the flying school will lose more land to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL). The BMRCL also plans to acquire a part of the flying school land for a proposed airport line. If this continues, there won't be any space left for flying one day, said Dyamannavar.

However, the BBMP justified the construction of the new road. According to  a senior BBMP officer from the Yelahanka zone, an old road which connected the Jakkur aerodrome and GKVK Layout was closed about two years back. It was situated behind the aerodrome and was shut to widen the Jakkur runway. This forced the residents to take the Ballari Road and the new road is planned to facilitate them, he said.

The Jakkur flying school has agreed to give the land for the construction of the road. But the BBMP has to build a compound for the school and a TDR will be given for the land. The BBMP has invited objections for this and then a tender will be invited.

Road ready

40 feet- The width of the road built at GKVK layout
1 km - Length of the road
Rs 5.5 crore- estimated cost of the road
332 sq meter - the property of GKVK which will be acquired by BBMP.
