Musical concert at Hasta Shilpa on Jan 20

Hasta Shilpa Trust, Manipal, announced a new performance initiative 'Music at Mudhol Palace Darbar hall' at Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village in Manipal, an initiative to enhance public appreciation of built-heritage from a performance perspective.

On January 20, Priya Purushothaman, Hindustani vocalist from Mumbai, will perform at Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village at 6.45 pm. There are only a limited number of seats (including baithak and chairs) due to the restricted inner confines of the Darbar Hall. Advance ticket purchase is recommended. Priya is a disciple of Vidushi Aditi Upadhya, Bengaluru, and has received specialised training from late Pt Dinkar Kaikini, a stalwart of Agra Gharana, and   Shashikala Kaikini. Currently, she is being guided by Pandit Sudhindra Bhaumik in Mumbai.

It also gives form to the dream of its founder, the late Vijayanath Shenoy, of making the Heritage Village a cultural complex. Performers in this series move away from the modern stage, conventionally used in classical performances, such as the formal auditorium, which separates the performer from the audience. Instead, it will re-appropriate a different 'stage' or performance context at Heritage Village by using differentiated seating (both baithak and formal) with the aim of enhancing the appreciation of both built-heritage and performance.

The January performance will be held at Mudhol Palace Darbar Hall which will be specially lit for the evening, yet another facet of this contextual experience. Darbar Hall is the Hall of public audience built in classic Maratha style of the early 19th century.
