Five wrestlers killed in accident in western Maharahstra

Five wrestlers and a driver were killed when their SUV hit a sugarcane-laden tractor near Vangli village in Sangli distict of western Maharashtra.

Five other wrestlers were injured in the incident and they are undergoing treatment in a local hospital.The accident took place at around 1 am in early hours of Saturday morning.
 
The mishap occurred on the Kadegaon-Sangli Road when the wrestlers – all affiliated to Kranti Kushti Sangh – were returning to Kundal village after participating in the wrestling tournament in Aundh village of neighbouring Satara district.
 
The deceased wresters were identified as Vijay Patil (Ramapur), Shubham Gharge (Soholi, Sangli), Saurabh Mane (Malkhed, Karad), Akash Desai (Kale, Satara) and Avinash Gaikwad (Shirala, Sangli).

The cruiser driver was identified as Ranjeet Dhanawade.
 
“We are in a state of shock...we have lost five good wrestlers and five others are injured,” said Sharad Lad, secretary of the association. "They were all from common families but were set to make big name in wrestling arena," he added.
 
A pall of gloom descended on the wrestling clubs and sporting circles in the Sangli, Satara and Kolhapur districts following the accident.
 
A case has been registered under sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicles Act at the Chinchni-Vangi police station.
 
It may be recalled, a few days ago, five national-level powerlifters had died at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi after a road accident on the Delhi-Panipat highway.
