Throw events allowed in Nehru Stadium

Last Updated 12 January 2018, 16:39 IST

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) finally had its way with the sports ministry acceding to its demand of holding throw events in the Khelo India programme inside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Earlier, the AFI was asked to hold the throw events in the warm-up area of the stadium as the Indian Super League matches were held on the turf.

A miffed AFI then shot a letter to the sports secretary on Tuesday and threatened to pull out of the Khelo India programme if the field (throw) events were not held inside the stadium. The AFI pointed out that football was repeatedly getting preference in a facility which was meant to organise athletics events.

The sports secretary Rahul Bhatnagar assured the AFI president that their request would be taken care of. It is believed that the AIFF had been asked to move the football event from the stadium on Wednesday night.

The inaugural Khelo India School Games 2018 will be held from January 31 for under-17 age group (boys and girls) across 16 sports disciplines.
