JOIN USThe year 2017 has been a year of tragedies for the city of Mumbai.
From the Elphinstone Road-Parel stampede, the Kamala Mills compound fire, the Bhendi Bazaar building collapse to deaths because of heavy downpour, more then 125 people have lost their lives in various incidents in the city during the year.
Friday's incident has yet again raised various issues and poses the question of whether Mumbai is sitting over a volcano.
Over the last two decades, fires, building collapses and stampede have turned out to be major killers.
Congestion and the multiple piling of structure on limited space in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region add to the woes. Safety and fire prevention is on the backburner and FSI norms are violated.
December 29: 14 people were killed and several others injured as a fire broke out in a restaurant at the Kamala Mills compound.
December 18: 12 people were killed after fire broke out at a dry snacks shop at Sakinaka area of Andheri
September 29: 22 people were killed and 39 others were injured following a stampede in a foot overbridge between Elphinstone Road and Parel stations because of rain, crowds and rumour-mongering
October 6: Fire broke out at Butcher Island in a BPCL tank containing diesel after a suspected lightning strike on it due to heavy thunderstorms in the city.
August 31: 33 people were killed and 17 injured when a century-old dilapidated building, that was up for cluster-development, caved in off the Pakmodia street in Bhendi Bazaar near the Sir JJ Hospital
August 29: Mumbai and its suburbs received over 250 mm rainfall in a span of eight to 10 hours. Nearly 12 people, including a prominent doctor, lost their lives in the Mumbai Metropolitan region
August 5: Three students from Unal Mill High School, Mahim died after they drowned in the Arabian Sea near Chowpatty beach Shivaji Park in Dadar. They were caught in tidal waves.
July 25: 17 people were killed and 11 others were injured when a four-storeyed structure caved in at Ghatkopar
January 23: Six people received burns at the LCC compound in the Dana Bunder area between the Masjid Bunder station and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus
