DH Interview: Don't see any change in DMK's political stand, says Kanimozhi

Last Updated 23 December 2017, 07:42 IST

DMK MP Kanimozhi on Friday walked into the Rajya Sabha to cheers from several MPs. Only a day before, she was exonerated by a special CBI court in the multi-crore 2G spectrum allocation scam.

Ministers and MPs from across party lines congratulated her. She walked up to former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who said "God bless you". Before flying down to Chennai, Kanimozhi spoke to Shemin Joy of DH on the verdict, its impact and DMK's political plans at the Parliament House.

The verdict has come as a relief for you. So, what next?

I will continue in politics. I will carry on. I may write a book. I hope I remember the details. But those seven years, I don't want to recall the ordeal. I was sure, as I said earlier, that we will see light at the end of the tunnel.

Were you sure that the outcome of the court proceedings would be positive?

To be very honest, I am very happy. Going by the merits of the case, it was clear that we will win. The whole case was based on notional loss. What we had been saying for last several years, the judge also said finally.

The CBI has said that they will appeal against the verdict acquitting you and others, including former Telecom Minister A Raja. Another legal battle is in the offing. What will be your strategy?

We will have to face it, fight it, and we will fight it out. We will put out our case before the higher court.

After the verdict and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to meet DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, there is speculation that DMK is switching sides and may join a BJP alliance. What do you say on this?

I don't think there is going to be any change. These are all speculation. Status quo will remain. I am reading it that way. I don't see any change. I am not the person who decides all these.

Several leaders, including former prime minister Manmohan Singh, were seen chatting with you in the Rajya Sabha. What were they saying?

They all are happy. I went to the former prime minister. He said "God bless you" and that he is very happy with the verdict.
