No real winter yet as temperatures higher than normal

Last Updated 11 December 2017, 20:16 IST

It's December and if you are wondering where is the chill, you may have to wait. The weatherman says the temperatures will remain higher than normal for the  next few days.

On Monday, until 5.30 pm,  the  maximum temperature in the city was 30 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature was 17.1 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature is three degrees above normal and the minimum 1.7 degrees above normal.

At 8.30 am, the maximum and minimum temperatures were 29.5 and 17.1 degrees Celsius, respectively.

"There is no dip in temperature because of the prevailing cyclonic circulation over Comorin area and the neighbourhood extending up to 1.5 km  above mean sea level. That's why easterly winds are prevailing. Ideally, northerly winds should prevail during the winter, but  that has not yet started," said Sunder M Metri, director-in-charge, India Meteorological Department, Bengaluru.

In the winter, the minimum temperature dips considerably while the maximum temperature remains normal because of a clear sky. But this time, under the influence of the changed weather systems,  the sky is clear while there are no clouds. The result is that  maximum and minimum temperatures remain high. The wind speed isn't more than 1 kmph while humidity is around 40% to 42%, Metri added.

The current weather conditions will remain unchanged for the next two to three days until the third week of December when  temperatures dip and remain so  until February.

IMD records show that the mean maximum and minimum temperatures for December are 26.5 and 16.2 degrees Celsius. On December 11 last year, the maximum and minimum temperatures in the city were 28 and 12 degrees Celsius, respectively.
